Chino Moreno unveils new group: Palms

Deftones frontman Chino Moreno loves to stay busy. He pleased fans in 2011 by releasing his first EP with side project Crosses (also stylized as †††). After some more time in the studio, he released a second EP under the same moniker before returning his attention to the Deftones. Anticipation built as the group hadn’t released music since the Record Store Day Exclusive Covers, which contained reworkings of tracks from acts such as The Cure and Sade. On November 12, 2012 the Deftones released Koi No Yokan to critical acclaim.Yet, Chino remains as energetic and ambitious as the music he creates.

On Sunday an untitled track from new side project Palms was unveiled by Chino on Mixlr.com. The song then popped up on YouTube but was subsequently pulled by Warner Music Group. Chino’s familiar ethereal vocals soar over slow, haunting guitar riffs. The atmosphere of the song recalls the vibe of one of Chino’s main influences: The Cure. Palms also includes Jeff Caxide, Aaron Harris and Bryant Clifford, all former members of Los Angeles metal band Isis. Palms plan on releasing their as-yet-untitled debut in June via Isis’s former label, Ipecac.

In the meantime, Chino remains on the road touring in support of Koi No Yokan. 94.3 The Shark is proud to present The Deftones at The Paramount in Huntington, NY on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at 7 p.m. Limited tickets are available via Ticketmaster or the venue box office.

Indie folk favorites perform in NY and LA, take home “Album of the Year” at Grammys

BROOKLYN - Mumford & Sons had a very impressive week. They visited Brooklyn’s new Barclays Center on Wednesday, February 6, performing to a sold out crowd of energetic fans who passionately sang and danced to a flurry of hits from 2009’s Sigh No More and 2012’s Babel. The night was also a first for many tri-state area fans who missed Mumford & Sons previous sold out New Jersey gig in July at Hoboken’s Pier A. While Ticketmaster was wiped clean of tickets for Wednesday’s show, StubHub and other second markets were flooded with tickets priced often at triple face-value.

The hysteria over tickets isn’t completely unfounded. Marcus Mumford and his fellow bandmates were nominated for not one, but six Grammy awards at Sunday’s 55^th annual event. These nominations included: Album of the Year (Babel), Best Rock Performance (“I Will Wait”), Best Rock Song (“I Will Wait”), Best Americana Album (Babel) and Best Long Form Music Video (Big Easy Express). They were also nominated for Best Song Written for a Visual Medium for the track “Learn Me Right” which they contributed to Pixar’s Brave soundtrack. Celebrations began early in the evening for the band when it was announced at the pre-telecast that they won their first ever Grammy for the documentary Big Easy Express directed by Emmett Malloy. The 2012 film follows Mumford and Sons as they trek across the American Southwest during the spring of 2011. The band, joined by fellow musicians Old Crow Medicine Show and Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, traveled from city to city via vintage train cars.

After a rousing Grammy performance of “I Will Wait” and an all-star tribute to Levon Helm that included Elton John, Zac Brown, Mavis Staples and Brittany Howard (Alabama Shakes), Mumford and Sons ended the evening on the highest note possible - - as recipients of the coveted Album of the Year. The group ousted fellow rockers The Black Keys, Jack White, fun., and R & B superstar Frank Ocean.

Despite their huge success, Mumford & Sons know how to maintain the intimacy of their songs. On Wednesday night at the Barclays Center, color-changing LED bulbs were strung like Christmas lights over the entire general admission floor mimicking the feel of a small outdoor folk festival, not a massive arena. Four black and white screens raised above the stage kept track of each of the musicians. Mumford and Son’s proved to the Brooklyn crowd they had more to offer than just the hits when they played “Reminder” and the previously unreleased track “Sister” on a B-Stage set up on the back of the general admission floor. Marcus asked the crowd to remain silent, which it did, as the band played acoustic versions of the aforementioned songs. Returning to the main stage, they closed the show with “Lover’s Eyes” and crowd-pleaser “The Cave.” Radiant white stage lights illuminated the entire arena, providing a full view of fans on the floor jumping in unison to the music.

The group also took part in this weeks Grammys’ MusiCares Person of the Year event at the Los Angeles Convention Center on February 8^th. They joined acts such as Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Elton John, Sting and John Legend in honoring New Jersey’s Bruce Springsteen. The band performed Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire.”

Mumford and Sons return to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center for an encore performance on Tuesday, February 12, 2013. This show and all remaining shows of the North American tour are SOLD OUT.

The 55^th Annual Grammy Awards aired live at 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 10, 2013 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Charlie Dane pens beautiful ballad in memory of Sandy Hook victims

Long Island is not shy when it comes to successful musicians. Most Islanders can sing you a verse or two of any of the “Piano Man” Billy Joel’s tunes. Many music fans in their twenties know every line of songs by local favorites-turned mainstream performers Taking Back Sunday or Brand New. Long Island native and former Straylight Run drummer Will Noon performed at this Sunday’s Grammy awards with the enormously popular group Fun. Even the shows host, L.L. Cool J, was born and raised in Bay Shore. With a plentiful and wide-ranging group of musicians as inspiration, it’s no wonder there exist many eager to follow in their footsteps.

Charlie Dane, 14, from Oyster Bay, NY has been playing music and making quite the splash in the local scene for years. She has performed at prominent tri-state venues, including the now-defunct Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale and in downtown NYC at City Winery. Charlie previously had the honor of singing the national anthem at the Nassau Coliseum before two Islanders games. She plays guitar, keyboards and most importantly, writes her own original lyrics and melodies.

While her vocal tone reminds the listener of Taylor Swift or Demi Lovato, it is absolutely unfair to lump her into the four-chord cookie-cutter pop song category. Charlie Dane is not afraid to abandon her acoustic guitar in favor of a harder, edgier sound as evidenced by “Dreamland,” one of her earliest original songs and the first track on her debut full-length of the same name. Charlie covers a variety of lyrical topics on Dreamland: relationships, love, dreaming, lounging around enjoying doing nothing. “98” is a reference to Psalm 98 and conveys the importance of music in daily life. “So, strum for your friends and drum, for your family, hum a little tune for all those in need of inspiration / And sing, for your soul sister, hear freedom ring and put a little dum deedum deedum deedum
in your life,” she sings, before returning to the infectious acoustic riff-based verse that channels the carefree, confident strum pattern of Jack Johnson. Every song on “Dreamland” has equal amounts of intelligent and elegant pop charm.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy, Charlie has released a new song entitled “20 Angels.” Over a beautiful piano ballad bringing to mind the best of A Fine Frenzy and Regina Spektor, Charlie reminds us the victims will forever be in our minds and hearts: “When you try your best, but you break down, Just pick yourself off of the ground / In your dreams they are still around / 20 angels flew, the rest ran out.” This mature single exemplifies the best qualities of singers/songwriters almost triple her age. With songwriting this strong, it is very clear that 2013 will be a successful year for the aspiring star.
